PGWP Application: Key Things to Consider Before You Apply

November 27, 2025

If you're an international student in Canada planning to stay and work after graduation, submitting a successful PGWP application (Post-Graduation Work Permit) is one of the most important steps you’ll take. The PGWP allows you to work for any employer in Canada and gain valuable experience that can support your pathway to permanent residence (PR).

But before you hitsubmit, there are several important factors to keep in mind. This article outlines the top things you should consider when preparing your PGWP application. Preparing for a PGWP application is crucial if you’re planning to stay and work in Canada after graduation

What Is a PGWP?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is an open work permit available to eligible graduates of Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs). Depending on the length of your program, the PGWP is valid for up to 3 years and allows you to work for any employer across Canada.

Top Things to Consider When Preparing a PGWP Application

1. Apply Within the Deadline

You must apply for your PGWP application within 180 days of receiving your final transcript and official letter of completion. Missing this window could make you ineligible.

2. Valid Study Permit at Time of Application

You need to have held a valid study permit at some point within the 180-day application window. If your study permit has expired, you must apply to restore your status and the PGWP simultaneously.

3. Eligible Program and Institution

Make sure your program meets PGWP eligibility requirements:

  • Must be at least 8 months long
  • Must be completed at a PGWP-eligible DLI
  • Must lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate

4. Full-Time Enrollment Requirement

You must have studied full-time in Canada during each academic session of your program. Some exceptions apply (e.g., leave of absence with approval or COVID-19 adjustments).

5. Document Accuracy and Completeness

Ensure your PGWP application is complete and accurate:

  • Final transcript
  • Official letter of completion
  • Valid passport (should cover the entire PGWP duration)
  • IMM5710 form (if applying from within Canada)

6. Work During the Waiting Period

If you apply while your study permit is still valid, you may be eligible to work full-time while waiting for your PGWP approval under implied status.

7. Program Length and PGWP Validity

Your PGWP duration is based on the length of your completed program:

  • Less than 8 months: Not eligible
  • 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP equals program length
  • 2 years or more: Eligible for a 3-year PGWP

8. Eligible Programs & English Language Certificate Requirement

Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD (university):

  • Language: Minimum CLB/NCLC 7 in all 4 skills (English or French)
  • Field of study: No field of study requirement

Other university programs (not bachelor's/master's/PhD):

  • Language: Minimum CLB/NCLC 7
  • Field of study: If you applied for a study permit on/after Nov 1, 2024, your program must be in an eligible field of study

College, polytechnic, non-university programs:

  • Language: Minimum CLB/NCLC 5
  • Field of study: If you applied for a study permit on/after Nov 1, 2024, your program must be in an eligible field of study

9. Travel Plans

Avoid international travel during processing unless you have a valid status and re-entry documents. Leaving Canada during processing could complicate your return.
