PGWP Requirements – Your Complete Guide to Post-Graduation Work Permit in Canada

July 04, 2025

Understanding the PGWP requirements could help you to stay and work in Canada after graduation. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) offers a valuable opportunity to gain Canadian work experience and lay the foundation for permanent residency. So, what are the PGWP requirements to ensure your eligibility?

What Is PGWP?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit issued to eligible international graduates of Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs). Once you are qualified for PGWP requirements, it allows you to work for any employer in Canada and is valid for up to three years, depending on different major and the length of your study program.

Why Understanding PGWP Requirements Matters

  • Gain valuable Canadian work experience
  • Qualify for Express Entry programs
  • Improve your Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score
  • Open the door to permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

  • You submit your PGWP application within 180 days of receiving official confirmation that you finished your program (like a transcript or completion letter)
  • Your study permit was still valid at some point during those 180 days between graduation and the time you applied.
