Express Entry candidates applying for Canadian permanent residency will soon stop receiving extra points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for holding an LMIA-based job offer.
Previously, candidates could gain an additional 50 or 200 CRS points for having such a job offer. These 50 points often played a crucial role in determining whether a candidate received an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residency or missed the opportunity. Immigration Minister Marc Miller revealed the change during a televised interview on Tuesday, December 17. The exact date for its implementation remains uncertain.
As of December 18, the government’s online points calculator continues to award 50 points for a valid job offer. The change announced on Tuesday is set to eliminate the extra points given for arranged employment. Previously, candidates could earn 50 additional CRS points for arranged employment in any NOC TEER category, and 200 points for a NOC TEER 0 role within major group 00, which includes executive leadership positions across various industries.
In 2024, most general Express Entry and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws had cut-off scores exceeding 500 points. Only category-specific draws often featured CRS cut-offs below 500 points.
Reasoning Behind the Changes
“We will introduce additional measures to strengthen the program and minimize the risk of LMIA fraud,” Miller stated.
By eliminating the extra points awarded under Express Entry for having a job offer, Miller explained that IRCC aims to enhance the fairness and integrity of Canada’s immigration system while reducing fraudulent activities. “This step is expected to remove the motivation for candidates to buy an LMIA, promoting greater equity and trust in the Express Entry process,” he added.
