The Student Direct Stream in Canada is no longer in operation. Many international students were able to obtain visas sooner because of this program and SDS applications were processed within 20 days. SDS approval rates were also higher for international students. However, starting from November 8th, all students will now apply to study in Canada by using the standard procedure.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was introduced in 2018 to speed up the application process for eligible postsecondary students. The SDS was subsequently made available to legal residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam.
Canada's purpose is to improve program integrity, alleviate student vulnerability, and ensure that all students have equitable and fair access to the application process, as well as a positive academic experience. To fulfill this pledge, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) was discontinued at 2:00 p.m. ET today.
Prospective students can apply through the standard study permit path, which accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support. Canada will continue to welcome international students from across the globe.
This change will not affect those who would like to apply for a study visa from a nation where the SDS initiative is available. All students, regardless of their eligibility for the SDS, are expected to meet Canada's study requirements.
This major change is one of the new rules for international students in Canada 2024 implemented in order to scale back on targets for admissions of temporary residents
