International Students Working Hours in Canada: What You Need to Know in 2025

April 25, 2025

Canada is a top destination for international students — not only for its world-class education but also for the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. However, understanding the rules about international students' working hours is crucial to staying compliant with your study permit and making the most of your time in Canada.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how many hours international students can work in Canada and recent changes.

Everything You Need to Know about International Students Working Hours in Canada? Canada allows international students to work while studying — both on-campus and off-campus, as long as they meet certain conditions on their study permit.

International students' working hours have been increased to 24 hours per week

Off-Campus Working Hours for International Students

Before November 15, 2022:

International students could work up to 20 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks (like winter or summer holidays).

New Policy

Canada lifted the 20-hour cap, allowing eligible students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus during school terms. As of 2025, the government may update or extend the international students' working hours policy, so it's important to check IRCC’s official updates.

Who Is Eligible to Work Off-Campus?

You can work off-campus in Canada without a separate work permit if you:

  • Have a valid study permit.
  • Are enrolled in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Are in a program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  • Are you studying full-time (or part-time in the final semester)?

On-Campus Working Hours for International Students

There’s no hour limit for working on campus, as long as you’re:

  • A full-time student at a DLI.
  • Holding a valid study permit.
  • Working directly for the school or a third-party vendor on school grounds.

Examples of on-campus jobs include library assistant, campus café worker, research assistant, etc.

International students can continue to work any number of hours on-campus and off-campus during break

Final Thoughts

Understanding the rules around international students' working hours in Canada is essential for making the most of your time as a student. Whether you're working to support yourself financially or gain valuable Canadian experience, staying informed and compliant will help you avoid issues and build a successful future.
