Canada has introduced new rules for international students effective November 8, 2024. Students must now apply for a new study permit before changing designated learning institutions (DLIs). Failing to inform authorities may invalidate their permit. Additionally, the off-campus work limit has increased to 24 hours per week, allowing students to earn more while studying.
Adjustment to International Students Working Hours
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, stated that the latest regulations affecting the International Student Program have gone into effect, including a restriction to the number of hours international students can work off campus, which was suggested earlier this year. This adjustment allows qualifying students to work up to 24 hours per week off campus while their classes are in session.
Moving forward, international students must apply for and be accepted for a new study permit before switching educational institutions. This adjustment is consistent with our essential work to increase the International Student Program's integrity.
What is DLI?
Designated learning institutions (DLIs) serve a crucial role in protecting student programs against misuse. Since 2015, IRCC has worked with DLIs to improve student compliance reporting. There will now be imposed for DLIs who fail to submit compliance reports or verify acceptance letters. With this modification, a DLI may be barred from accepting new overseas students for up to a year for failing to give the necessary information.
These enhancements will give additional control while also assisting overseas students and ensuring their academic experiences in Canada.
