GOOD NEWS FOR EXPERIENCED WORKERS IN PRIORITY SECTORS ASPIRING TO BECOME PERMANENT RESIDENTS

May 31, 2023

May 31, 2023—Ottawa—With employers eagerly seeking ways to fill numerous vacant positions across the country, immigration has emerged as a crucial piece to solve this puzzle. Recognizing this reality, the Canadian government is building an immigration system that acts as a catalyst for growth, empowers businesses to address their labor needs, and strengthens the French-speaking community. When combined, these efforts will ensure that Canadians benefit from economic and social prosperity in the years to come.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, today announced the introduction of the first-ever selection tool based on categories for Canada's leading economic immigration management system, Express Entry. The category-based selection will enable Canada to extend invitations to potential permanent residents with skills, training, and language proficiency. Detailed information on invitation timelines for individual categories and the application process will be announced in the coming weeks.

This year, category-based selection invitations will focus on candidates with:

  1.  French language proficiency
  2.  Work experience in the following sectors:

   - Healthcare

   - Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)

   - Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors

   - Transportation

   - Agriculture and agri-food

By allowing the government to invite more skilled workers in these sectors, the category-based selection tool supports the commitment to welcoming essential workers to engage in communities nationwide. Additionally, by specifically focusing on French-speaking immigration, the Canadian government ensures that French-speaking communities can continue to thrive in Canada in their chosen official language.

The category-based selection tool will help Express Entry respond more quickly to the evolving labor market needs and economic changes in Canada. This approach builds on the successful economic immigration system of Canada, which relies on a high-skilled workforce. These priorities maintain a focus on bringing in skilled workers with the potential to integrate and contribute to Canada's future.
